Jane Eyre Essay

Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre was basically a biography of Jane Eyre's life. There were many things in the novel that took us by suprise, we were never inside anyone's head except for Jane's. There is a chance that if we were ever in someone else's head, that not as many things would have come as a suprise to us. This was a good idea on Charlotte Bronte's part because the book would not have been as intresting if we weren't suprised as much as we were.

If we could get inside Rochester's head, we would have known ahead of time that it wasn't Grace Poole who set the bed on fire, and we would have known about his wife that he had been hidding for years. We also would have known who Richard Mason really was. The gypsy wouldn't have been so mysterious because we would know that it was really Rochester.

All in all, Charlotte Bronte did a great job at putting together this novel because she put together so many suprises by only being in Jane Eyre's head and never in the other main characters.

  1. You have amazing ideas Ryan, and I really think you're off to a good start with this paper. Make sure to include how passionate Jane was because that definitely impacted her life!

LOok forward to reading it when you are done!!

  2. Ryan,

It seems as if you want to make the argument that the close first person narration (the presentation of the work as 'autobiography') is essential to maintaining the sense of mystery. Because we see things only from Jane's point of view, we cannot 'know' the surprises that wait in store for us. This seems a good start, but it's still pretty broad. Let's see if we cant find a moment in the text (perhaps Jane's recurrent direct addresses to the reader--or maybe the idea that Jane's isolation throughout the narrative is duplicated by the narration (first person versus third)) and see if we can't build upon that. You're going to need to USE the text to develop and defend your argument, so let's make sure there's enough there for you to address the effect of the narrative choice Bronte makes.

  3. good start but i think you need to have more specific times when she really portrays this idea of being only inside her head. i like what Mr. Lavender said about all of the references directly to the reader. it is broad but i think this paper could have definite potential.
