Scarlet Letter Paper
The dont really want to talk about a theme, so I think I will focus on a character.
Chillingworth was the most interesting character to me, and I want to focus on revenge, and how it really forms his life. It seems like when he comes back from being tortured and sees that his wife is the center of the public shame, and she has been impregnated by someone unknown, this revenge just takes over. He had this need to punish the man who did that to his wife.
I thought it was interesting how the need for revenge formed him. How over time he starts to look worse and worse, and more and more evil. And how eventually when he had lost his person he was punishing he eventually died.

Sierra,
ReplyDeleteYours seems a good approach to the novel: How does the quest for shame affect those seeking it? And what, in the end, does Hawthorne think about revenge? Go back and re-read those passages that talk about Chillingworth's transformation (Hester's observations when she meets with him to tell him she is going to reveal his identity to Dimmesdale, for example, or the description of his death in the book's conclusion). Also, keep in mind that line on page 521 that hatred and love might not be the sane thing). USE the text to help you first develop and then defend your thesis.
Sierra! i think you could add two things. First, mention something about how revenge changed his moral being, how torturing Dimmesdale actually caused Chillingworth to do things and be things that he previously thought was morally wrong. Next, i think tying the whole paper to his inward/outward being would be great. you could really show how much he is revengeful on the inside based on how calm he is on the outside.
