Jane Eyre first impression Gage

The first 10 chapters really reminded me of an old fashioned Matilda.  They both have a mean family, are misunderstood, go to a scary school, have a mean principal one nice teacher, and one close friend.  The only difference is that instead of being able to do magic, Jane is ugly.  I find this novel pretty hard to read because of the confusing content.  Even some of the more simple scenes require that I look over them multiple times.  After reading through the first section of the book, I have started to feel really bad for Jane.  Her family shuns her, and her orphan school is very cruel to her and all the other girls.

  1. Gage,

Sorry to hear that you're struggling a bit with this novel's language--though reading the passages through twice sounds like a good strategy. My hope is that, as the story picks up, your interest will, too--and this might make it less of a slog. I look forward to reading your reactions to events yet to come!

  2. I had to lough when I read about your comparison with Matilda because I have not thought about this so far. It is really kind of similar in some parts. Probably you like the book better the older Jane gets because she gets so much more different experiences than matilda as a little girl did. As for the language, I can completely understand you, I need to read some passages multiple times to understand them but you get used to it actually.
