Dimmesdale sucks

It is not fair for Hester to take all the blame for what happend with her and Dimmesdale. she has gone through so much pain and she has gone through it all alone. Dimmesdale is such an ass for getting Hester pregnant and then just leaving her to raise a kid and suffer humilitaion every day. Yes it happens now a days with pregnancy that males arent ready for and they leave but that is just no ok. if i was Hester i would be torturing him day to day and definitely rat him out. Hester should do everything to make his life miserable. :)

  1. carla i agree completllyy
guys mature at a much different level .. and have this issue of being strong and thinking they are much of the time they are superios howeveer they have little to contribute to the world and the least they could give back would be there for a women that is the ONLY REASONf for life actually happening ( or being carried out.. but almost always a guys fault.

  2. I agree with this as well. Dimmesdale has no courage and if he really loved Hester he would suffer with her. She should make him even more miserable because until he comes clean he deserves it.

  3. I agree. Its not fair for Hester to suffer and take all the blame. What dimsdale did was wrong too. Hes so lame, i cant stand him! And i COMPLETELY agree with you about how Hester should do everything she can to make his life miserable.

  5. actually I Jo I think you are stereotyping and putting all men into a group, but by doing this you have almost became a sexist towards men, which is the opposite of what this book is trying to accomplish. And Carla I agree with you I think any woman would have ratted him out, but I think she realizes how much it is hurting him by being such a wimp.

  6. I agree with this to an extent. Yes it is wrong of Dimmesdale to leave Hester alone with her child and to let her go through all this humiliation alone. But Dimmesdale is scared. He is going through a lot right now too just not as much as Hester. It's not that he should recieve any sympathy but he should be embraced by some empathy and i think that is what he gets from Hester because she loves him.

  7. i know. i kinda hate dimsdale. i feel like in most books the man is supposed to be the hero. in this book the man is just a dumb baby. i dont like him at all. but then again if he did step up and admit the truth hester couldn't be as good as she is.

  8. Hester would never want Dimsdale to suffer more. This whole situation came about because Hester and Dimsdale love each other. It's not like he raped her and took off. Even if Hester wanted Dimsdale to suffer as much as possible she wouldn't have to do anything. The worst thing for Dimsdale is for him to keep his secret, which is killing him. This coupled with the fact that Roger Chillingworth feeds off this pain makes Dimsdale's life miserable as well. Hester definitely does not want Dimsdale to suffer because she wants to go tell him about Roger Chillingworth. She loves him so she would never want him to be in such pain.

  9. Well, Carla, your post certainly seems to have engendered a good deal of comment (well done). You're right, of course, that Dimmesdale is pretty repugnant as a result of his actions, but as Mal points out, reason goes out the window when love walks in the door.
