Chillingworth Shouldn't Be The Bad Guy

Hi friends. I want to know what your guys think about my essay idea. I was thinking about writting about how Hawthrone makes you want to idolize the wrong people. For example he makes you want to hate Chillingworth, but in reality he is for the most part a respectable guy. Chillingworth is rich, has a hot wife and is a successful pychisan. I would be pretty mad to if my wife cheated on me. So why is Roger a bad guy? Hawthorne makes you sympathize for the wrong people. If Dimmisdales death at the end of the book is suppose to make you sad, it fails. Dimmisdale is a coward and his character does not make you want to sympathize with him at all. But Hawthrone trys to convince you to feel bad. Why is it that he trys to convince us Roger is an evil guy and Dimmisdale is a good guy? Thats my idea, so tell me what you think.

  1. Hi connor, hows it going?
For the most part I agree with your thesis, but I will be devils advocate... Hawthorne does make it seem that its unfair for Hester, and its obvious that his pure rage and need for revenge eventually kills him

  2. Ok first off Mr.Radinky I just going to say it, i think your idea is pretty awful. Chillingworth is a bad guy, you can't say keeping someone alive so that they can suffer is a good thing. That's like hitting a deer with your car and letting it bleed out instead of shooting it and taking it out of it's misery. If he was really a good guy he would just let him die or not seek revenge the whole book. Secondly Dimsdale is a coward through most of the book, UNITL the end where he admits his sins and dies a hero. Sorry bud but smell the roses we are in the 21st century here and its time to stop just making things up as you go, and start living like an eagle.

  3. Radinky,
Don't ever let em get you down. Prove yourself. Chillingworth isn't bad, now that hes just dead. but what is good if good isn't bad? and if bad is good than good is bad is good and isn't bad after all. but in that case, good is bad is bad but good would mean that bad is good. this information should definitely help

  4. Connor,

As we discussed the other day, I always admire those who take an 'oppositional' stance (that is, one that seems to go against the grain of traditional interpretations); however, as evident from the comments above, you definitely have your work cut out for you.

I'll be interested to see what you come up with.
