My Idea

Im thinking about ripping on the way of life for most of America Today. You know, go through high school, go to college, do good then you can get a good job. Like Thoreau said," The universe constantly and obediently answers to our conceptions; whether we travel fast or slow, the track is laid for us". I disagree with this statement. Nothing is laid out for you, you have to take it for it to be your life. The way the western world works right now is by that form of a cart on a track, being guided. Its bullONEY. People should have the choice to do whatever they want, screw the track.

  1. I like this idea a lot..It's kind of like work as hard as you can and then die. What is the purpose really? But also think about the other side, what would happen if you were just to say "screw this" to school, work, etc. Society most likely wouldn't accept you. If you didn't conform, you'd most likely not make it. You wouldn't have the money to buy food or shelter, the resources for a healthy life, and you'd also be depriving yourself of all the privledges society has. It's kind of a tricky thing to think about since civilization has existed for hundreds of years.

  2. Yeah this was just the base idea, I'm going to elaborate on this quite a bit.

  3. Mason,

Jesse raises some good points, but I agree with her that this is a potentially terrific topic (though a very broad one--part of your challenge is going to be narrowing your focus through use of specific and appropriate examples). Have you misread that Thoreau quotation? I wonder if you and he don't actually agree. I think he might be saying that, no matter what our pace, we're bound to head down the 'track' that society has laid out for us. It wounds as if BOTH you and he want to jump the rails!
